Plant Nurseries

13 February 2010

A vast acreage of perennial crops were destroyed due to lack of maintenance during the civil war which resulted in a dearth of plants for cultivators who were resettled in their villages. The Rural Development Societies of the three conflict areas took over the responsibility of implementing plant nurseries in the affected areas sponsored by Emace Sri Lanka.  The necessary advice and technical methodology was obtained from the agriculture officers of the areas. Rs. 25,000/= was issued as an interest free loan for the initial expenses for implementing the plant nurseries which was repaid in no time. Plants such as jack, bread fruit, coconut, king coconut, papaya, lemon, arecanut, jumbo orange etc. were planted as they were in much demand. These plant nurseries sold plants at a very reasonable price so that all farmers could afford to purchase them. The profit received from these nurseries were such that the RDSs were able to expand their venture into other areas of the districts which were also under the conflict.

Plant nurseries in the conflict stricken areas which were maintained by the males in the respective villages. The 22 plant nurseries which were situated in the Bolgoda, Panadura regions were also maintained by families under the livelihood projects which were initiated by us. 12,700 Teak plants were also planted in nurseries in Galgamuwa in the North central Province.
