Health Sector ProjectsHIV/AIDS – Education and awareness raisingMore than two-decade long internal conflict and the 2004 tsunami have jointly contributed to a large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country.The IDPs, as other marginalized sections of society, are a high risk grouping terms of sexually transmitted diseases,including HIV/AIDS. Among
them, women are particularly at risk, having being war-widowed and/or
having lost family support systems, making them vulnerable to The
first project undertaken by EMACE in the health sector was at a refugee
welfare centre in Poonthottam, in the Vavuniya
district, on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The second, targeting both categories of IDPs, covered 11 welfare centres in Moratuwa where tsunami affected IDPs were accommodated and, a centre with 9 units in Vavuniya for IDPs due to conflict.
